Yoga For Relaxation
Relaxation practices in classes vary from class to class. Generally classes include 10-15 minutes of stillness or breath awareness to end the class. On other occasions I will lead the class through a longer practice of perhaps 15-30 minutes duration; leading students to a much deeper level of relaxation.
Ironically, lying down can be far from easy. Beginners may find themselves twitching and moving around before eventually allowing themselves to be still, bringing relaxation. Even those able to be physically still, may find that their mind is racing and their bodies full of tension induced by their thoughts and emotions.
With practice it is possible to become able to relax and to experience the benefits that relaxation brings in reducing stress, improving concentration and bringing about a sense of self-control and well-being.
"Even when I am too tired to do many postures,
I always enjoy relaxing and leave feeling so much better.
Sometimes it is all I come to class for." [Student]
One of the most popular relaxation practices in my yoga classes is the practice known as Yoga Nidra. This is a very profound practice. I have recorded a CD to enable people to also enjoy this practice at home.
